Saturday,
March 24, 2007 - Author Oliver "Buzz" Thomas speaking on the book Arranged around 10 of life's most intriguing questions, this book is written for people who want to live lives of purpose and meaning without having to put your brains in their pockets. It's for the "steeple dropouts" who grew up on organized religion, as well as for the millions of Americans who, each Sunday, recite ancient creeds about virgin births and bodily resurrections, all the while feeling just a tad unconvinced. Reverend Oliver "Buzz" Thomas was orddained a Baptist minister and started out in fundamentalist Christian trenches, but came to see that this narrow, judgmental agenda didn't square with his view of the teachings of Jeses or with good common sense. Come share three hours (9-noon) with Buzz, hosted by the church's Evangelism and Growth Committee (E&G). No registration required. Contact the E&G committee chair at EG@StJohnChurch.net with any questions.

A Letter to the Honorable Senator Richard Roeding Earlier this year, the Honorable Senator Richard Roeding, Kentucky Senator, made demeaning and anti-gay comments about the bold action of the University of Louisville by adding domestic straight and gay couples to their health insurance benefits. These comments, as well as comments toward the gay Republican group "Log Cabin," included words like "those kinds of people" and "Queer" were offensive and unbecoming of a public servant. The Church Council of St. John United Church of Christ in Bellevue, KY (the only Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area), at the request of its Justice, Peace, Mission and Stewardship Committee, asked Rev. Keith Haithcock to write a letter on behalf of the congregation to address Senator Roeding's comments. The letter is linked below. Letter to Senator Roeding (PDF file)
