The Meaning of
Our Logo The
clover or leaf-like ornament with four lobes found in the logo is called a Quatrefoil.
It is found throughout the architecture of our building. It is most prominent
in stone work above the main entrance. You will see it at the top of the Gethsemane
window. This shape has sometimes been interpreted to represent the four Gospels
- Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
The shadow effect around
the Quatrefoil represents diversity and growth, which are a part of our mission. The
four diamond shapes, also a Quatrefoil, represent the four traditions that came
together in 1957 to form our denomination, the United Church of Christ. Those
traditions are: Christian, Congregational, Evangelical, and Reformed. St. John
Church was originally part of the Evangelical tradition. The uneven or jagged
edges represent movement, calling us to always move forward with the spiritual,
compassionate, nurturing, worshiping, learning, and fellowship focus of our mission.
At the top is our nickname, The Church on the Avenue.
We are the only Church on Fairfield Avenue in Bellevue. Many people in the community
refer to our Church as such. At the bottom of our logo you will find our formal
name, St. John United Church of Christ. At the
center of everything is the cross, which is true of our mission as well. For it
is the cross of Christ that is central to our faith community at St. John Church.
It is the cross that calls us to share our gifts and resources, and to serve ALL
with unconditional love and acceptance. The logo was
developed out of efforts of our Evangelism and Growth Committee and the Church
Council. The Church Council approved this logo as our official logo on April 10th,
2000. The logo calls us to remember our commitment
with Jesus Christ and our covenant with St. John Church. |
