In 2003, St. John United Church of Christ unanimously approved a measure to become an open and affirming (ONA) congregation. This forward-thinking designation means that we welcome people of all races, ages, abilities, ethnicities, socio-economic levels, sexual orientations and gender identities into the full life and ministry of the church. In 2007, passionate church members formed the GLBT Alliance Committee to help the church live out its ONA commitment. This committee aspires to extend God’s extravagant welcome to all, particularly GLBT folk, through education and support regarding GLBT related issues. The committee has had a very productive first year. New members are welcome! So far, committee members have participated in the Greater Cincinnati Youth Summit and Northern Kentucky University Coming Out Day events, helped to staff a booth and float/marchers for the Cincinnati Pride Festival, and planned for a GLBT Media Center that would serve the church and the general public.
Statement of Purpose:
The St. John GLBT Alliance Committee extends God’s extravagant welcome to all through education and support for the congregation and the greater community regarding GLBT related issues. We will strive to achieve this by providing a media center, developing community activities and discussion forums and supporting related church activities.
Contributions to the GLBT community:
- Northern Kentucky World AIDS Day prayer service
- Local Coming Out Day event
- Cincinnati Pride Festival - Information Booth and Marching in Pride Parade
- Speaker’s Bureau
- GLBT Media Center (open to the public)
